remember that the positive and negative pressure are not centered on the foil, depending on foil section they may very well be at about 30%, wich would result in totally neutral rudder... does not seem very interesting to steer ...

heeling does NOT mean speed. when you need to pull the tiller that much, you either have bad sail setting or simply too much sail area (tough I agree it can be funny)

That eye 7 foot high seem to be the right place. I put up a carabiner on it and the straps on the carabiner. another thing: I think the manual say to use the mainsheet to raise/lower the mast, right? It work but with a pulley at the bow you can also use one of the winch

me too I prefer to use ratchet strap (4 total)

the best way to imagine the setup is that you are making 2 temporary standing rigging, one for the mast and one for the boom, and these riggings are pivoting at the briddle.

Hull speed is not a precise limit, it is only an approximation of the speed where wave resistance increase very quickly. Once you get past it the wave resistance decrease quickly and remain relatively stable, but frictional resistance is still growing and overall you still need more power to go ...

BTW the mainsheet that is in front of the companion way(on my setup, not original) is not really a bad thing, we often found ourself grabbing it as an extra hand-hold when getting out of the cabin

With my C26 I have been at 7 knot quite a few time. Record while surfing is 10.4 knot (GPS was set-up to show average of 5 seconds, so actual top was probably a little more)... And it was with a fully loaded boat, engine prop dragging in water and towing a dinghy... clearly over-canvased :P

It is not very common to tow a dinghy in these conditions but with mine it worked well. It needed to be that far back because it does surf the waves pretty quickly for 100-150'. With 50' of rope the motor got a kick in the back that way:P

Oops, I had not looked at the photo when writing the post. I see that you have removed a lot, please start rebuilding now, it is probably not worth diging much lower! (btw IF you have to go lower, use impact hammer to shatter the lead&resin, then an aspirator to put them aside)

Hmm, I replaced exactly that 2 years ago and it's not very fun job to do... so much work and when it's over nobody see what youve done!

I have removed all the lead in order to remove the plywood around the keel box and replace it, but given that the wood is next to the leed wich is next to the hull ...

Hello Mile, the Chrysler do quite well when it blow, but keep in mind this is a 26 footer and can get pretty bumpy when the sea is forming. But for this size of boat, I think it will perform better than a macgregor or modern hull with more interior volume.

When I'm in shallow deph i let the keel down a bit, so if I ground I can raise it and back up.

How were you heeled in your best upwind performance? When I had enough wind to test, I seemed to gain a bit of speed when the rail go to water level, but could not stay this way long enough (rudder and lack of wind) to test the limit to get optimum speed

Update: I've been able to test the boat more recently and have found some limitation with this rudder. When the boat is heeled so that the rail touch the water, the rudder is partly in the air and with this limited surface the boat turn to the wind

So...not the best model if you want to race, but ...

Have you compared the price of this wire/rope combination to all-rope spectra? (or dyneema,vectran,etc) these new fiber are pretty stiff with about 2% elongation, and need smaller diameter than comparable polyester(dacron) line

Good point, my sheets are 3/8, and it is obviously for comfort as it is "multiplied" 6 time at the boom, wich give a resistance over 20 000 pound... everything on the boat will be gone before this part fail:P
