Thanks, I was afraid I was going to run out of projects anyway. It's all buttoned up for the winter now, but it gives me a reason to get through another Green Bay winter.

I read somewhere that the rule of thumb is 2hp per 1000# displacement or therabouts. The Pearson23 in the adjoining slip uses a 6hp Evinrude 2-stroke with no problem. My Yamaha weighs in at 85 lbs, and a full 6-gallon fuel tank is about 35 more. If the lighter motor and removing the galley unit does...

I have a 9.9 Yamaha long shaft 2-stroke on my '78 pop-top, also on a Garelick mount. It is smooth, quiet and powerful, but heavy. A 4-stroke would be heavier still. The Garelick extends the motor farther aft than the original mount, and combined with the heavier motor is affecting the trim to the po...

Visualize a 100' or so of dirty, wet anchor rode stuffed into a small compartment with no drain or air circulation, then let it ferment in the summer sun for a week or so. As my daughters would say.....EEEEEWWWW! Maybe the anchor and chain stored on the roller, and the line unshackled, coiled, and s...

DIY furler
Most of the DIY systems I've looked into have been used on 15-17' boats with very small jibs, and they are not billed as reefing systems. The big problem is the lack of a proper, stiff luff foil that will take the rotational input at the base and transmit it to the head of the unit. Given that the f...

I agree with your thoughts on roller trailers for sailboats. Even if the weight of the boat doesn't deflect the hull, you are just a plugged cockpit drain from disaster if you store it outside for the winter. The C22 that I rescued came with a roller trailer, and the parts boat came with the standar...

Sounds like you are making fine progress. I inquired into four or five C20's a couple years ago, and all but one had no cushions and varying degrees of rot below. One, based on the PO, had the swing keel winch pulled loose and had fractured the bulkhead. That area may warrant some extra attention. T...

Not sure which blocks you are referring to. If you download the C22 Owners Manual, all the blocks are listed under "Small parts bag #2" in the rigging section. Any part numbers would be Chrysler part numbers though, and useless. You can check your line sizes against the specified sizes lis...

C20 Ballast
If you look it up on Sailboatdata.com you will see that it has a stub keel that contains the ballast, leaving a relatively light swing keel. I looked at them before settling on the C22 due to cabin size, and I thought the swing keel weighed less than 100lbs. I had a Hunter22 with 1300lbs of lead ing...

I was considering a coat of white lithium grease, which I've found to be very stable in other applications. My upper bearing, with the flange inside the cockpit is very tight, while the lower mushroom bearing was so brittle it just fell apart. Go figure. I have the sliding galley on the starboard si...

I dropped the post today to replace the lower mushroom bearing, and found a thick coat of petrified lube on it. It took carb cleaner and a 3M pad to get it off, and I was wondering if anyone else puts grease in there. I'm not a big fan of putting grease in a place where it can't be refreshed or repl...

How about just drilling a couple holes in the trailing edge and filling them with lead shot until negative bouyancy is reached? Many skeet clubs sell recovered shot for a dollar or so a pound, and the holes could be easily sealed with epoxy. Two or three pounds would probably make a huge difference.

C22 swing keel
You may want to think long and hard about this project. This is a 800lb cast iron keel, plus fabricating new pivot brackets, then dealing with the winch and pendant assembly. If the keel is gone because the brackets failed, the winch and bridge deck are likely damaged also. TLC-starved C22's are usu...

The 1977 C22 price list in the documents file has one of these critters listed as a factory option. Has anyone ever seen or heard of one on an actual boat? Reefing the jib
From a safety standpoint any loose sail must be secured, and securing the top of the jib would be really difficult. Any unsecured sail would become a twisted ball of dacron and line in short order. I've been sailing an American Fiberglass17 2+2 this summer while working on the C22, and have it equip...

There is one other consideration in that the caulk probably acts as a cushion between the aluminum toe rail and the thin fiberglass deck flange. It would help keep dock impacts from chipping and cracking the gelcoat at least. Just a thought.

The toe rail has some caulk, but not all that much. The hull/deck joint is the "shoe box" style, with a flange of about 1 1/2" extending down from the deck assembly. This flange goes down over the upper edge of the hull all the way around, so water would have to go UP under the flange...

I don't think it would be quite that high. A C26 would require a dual-axle trailer which would support more weight in the center. Depending on where the winch support is set and how the boat is loaded, I think 250llbs is in the range. If in doubt, run your tow vehicle over a truck scale without the ...

FYI: The swing keel is cast iron, not lead. It can be sandblasted, primed and painted, then bottom coated. You do not want barnacles on the keel or up in the keel slot, jamming it. Especially if you want to leave it in the water for two years. We only have Zebra mussels here in WI, and our four mont...

I made a temporary frame on the order of yours to get my 1100lb American Fiberglass Mini-Tonner off the trailer so I could get jack stands under it. Just a thought, but when you are well heeled that cast iron keel is extended out at a 20-25 deg angle, which would put a LOT of torque on the pivot pin and bracket. In addition the keel pendant, which would normally support half the weight, would not be helping much. Are you getting water under the ...

Rudder troubles
My C22 (not the parts boat) came with a solid HDPE rudder from Idasailer. It's quite the piece of work, and I think the boat would break in half before the rudder. I haven't had it in the water yet, but I'm shooting for the 15th.
