Fair Winds, Following Seas
Well, last Saturday I delivered my '79 C22 to a new owner. Today I spent three hours with him going over the rebuilding and repairs I've done, and showed him my method of raising the mast and setting up the rigging. I know he's already visited this board, not sure if he's a member yet. I'd like to t...

There should be a secret club for those of us who have changed keel pin brackets. T-shirt, certificate suitable for framing, maybe even a secret handshake. I put my stern on a stack of cinder blocks, and used a constructed beam and two stacks of blocks to hold the front up. I had to drop my bunks to...

For something similar in the airplane world we would use a piece of T6 aluminum as a backing plate or an imbedded mounting block. T6 is hard enough and unless you daily immerse it in seawater it will last longer than the boat. You could powder coat or anadize it, or even just paint it before you ins...

I have the drawings for the briddles, send me a PM with your email if you need them. The keel cable is 3/16 stainless steel, I bought everything needed at Home Depot. You only need to lower the keel a few inches to replace the cable. Check the keel section, there are pictures of when I replaced mine...

Your keel looks new compared to mine. My keel was painted with an epoxy, then had rusted below the paint and it came off in 1/16th thick chunks. I used a welders chipping hammer, then a rust remover disc in an angle grinder. I painted three coats or rustoleum rusty metal primer, then sprayed color o...

I thought about a gin pole, a 2x4 8 feet. The deep ramp I use has a huge courtasy dock, so I launch and motor to the dock, then hang the main and jib and route the lines and such. I also use that time to explain to passangers how the boat works, how to change the jib for a tack, how to hoist and dro...

I made a thread on here when I installed mine. I did a google search for the part number someone else used, then ordered it. I think the hinge was about $60. It makes it SO much easier to raise it single handed. I wouldn't worry about the stress cracks, unless you are trying to make a showboat. As l...

I made a pair of the briddles by taking a 2x4 and putting two nails in it the length of the dimmessions, then using the thimbles to set the length. I've raised the mast twich without, and a dozen times with them. Take the time to make a set, then get 4, 10 foor nylon tiedowns from harbor freight. Mt...

I mounted mine outside on the stern slightly left of centerline, pointed straight down. Ran the wire through an existing hole where a different motor mount was installed, then inside and fowrard down the port side to my meter mounted in an electrical panel. Mine is a cheap 2 inch panel mount, and I ...

I've done it with the stock mast step using the boom/gin pole, by just lifting as you stated, and with the hinge installed. Save your self a major headache and take the time to install a mast hinge. With the hinges, and the side briddles, raising the mast is a non-event. I can do it solo using the b...

I did mine a year ago. I have drawings posted that should be enough to have brackets made. Figure $100 for steel, prob $300+ for stainless. In a yard with a forklift 6 to 8 hours labor at whatever their hourly rate is. Replace the keel cable while you are there. I also removed the stuck snuber and g...

Car keys. My 1999 Land Rover Discovery does well pulling the boat on a trailer, but is long in the tooth. I test drove a 2009 Mercedes M320 Bluetech and loved it. Also looking at a 2007 Porsche Cayanne, and a 2003 Mecedes G Wagon. I only pull the boat a few times a year, but also want something nice...

I installed a mast hinge, and with it and the briddles it is easy to raise and lower ...
