Re: What is this?
Unless there is a power supply plug close by, that is just a tiller extension end holder.

In the water 24/7
Since I bought Happy Place, I have had it at on the trailer at a dry dock marina. I liked the fact it was stored dry with the mast up and rigged ready to go. The first mate or kids and I could hook it to the truck and splash it in minutes. Now the kids are done and our work schedules have made going...

On many older outboards there is a adjustment bolt/screw on the upper or lower steering bracket that you could tighten up. On my Chrysler outboard there is a simple bracket the runs from the transom clamp to the tiller mount that locks everything straight. http://i929.photobucket.com/albums/ad138/rb...

I have an AGM battery, a small solar panel that fits in the window (think its a 1.6 amp) and the Chrysler outboard also charges the battery when running. When we were in the Apostle Islands this summer we went for 4 days with out shore power to charge. We were docked at night so there was no need fo...

JSA; Good story. It a good rule to deploy the ladder anytime your at anchor. You never know when you may end up in the water, by choice or by accident. A Coast Guard in the Apostle Islands once told me that most drowning victim's are recovered with there zipper down  . They had gone up on dec...

As for your boom pulling away for the mast before it's all the way up. Wonder if a PO had shortened the boom at some point? I have never had a issue with the boom coming apart form the mast, and lowering it would be a pain as you noted. Looking at your pictures you may want to try attaching you main...

That doesn't look like the original rudder pipe, thicker than stock. The picture of the bottom side shows bolts through rudder cheeks and pipe. Rudder cheeks and pipe were originally welded together I wonder if you remove bolts at the bottom you will be able to remove the pipe out the top. May be a ...

Possible Chrysler Trailer on Craigslist
It's hard to verify with the scrap loaded on it, but It got lots the markings of a Chrysler trailer.

I had to check since Happy Place is in the yard getting it's mast re-wired (pictures and story to come). I would not worry about it if there is no cracks in the gel coat. It's well above the waterline, and not in an area that takes a load often. I also have flex where you described. The inner liner ...

Correct. they are usually 2x6 lumber. I have not had the pleasure of replacing them yet, but I don't think it would be hard to bend a fresh/wet piece of treated 2x6 in to shape with help from a (large) friend or a c-clamp. I did replace my bunk carpet 3 years back and have left over if your interest...

Going to play with the Tall Ships
Three years ago we trailered Happy Place up to Superior WI to take in The Tall Ships Duluth. We had so much fun we are going to do it again http://tallshipsduluth.com/ The thrill of being on the water with these majestic ships is hard to describe. Then, as long as we are up there, we'll trailer over...

Welcome aboard. The PO of my boat had fabricated some big medal backing plates that hold both the mast support and the back stays. That really helps spread the load from those items. It's also wise to have someone hold the mast support when rolling the mast back to step it. I have also used tie down...

Not sure what that would be, I have never seen any type of keel cushion on the under side of the hull. May be something a previous owner thought was needed. I usually just let the keel hang down about an inch when fully raised. I would think that pulling the keel into some sort of pads would put ext...

That mushroom shaped bushing in your pictures is should actually be your lower tiller bushing, with the rounded part inserted in the hull. That allows the tiller shaft the ability to pivot a little to line up with the upper tiller shaft bushing. Rudder craft has a good picture of how it's layout. ht...
