I just read about a repair that one of the Columbia guys did. It involved taking it apart, coating everything with vaseline, and reassembling. You then totally immobilize the rudder and inject thickened West epoxy into the area. It worked for him. Instructions are on the West site I think.

Best shape will be with a loose footed main, but I think to take advantage of that you need a sail designed to be loose footed.

For those of you who read Cruising Outpost magazine, my story and pictures "Adventures in Boat Delivery" was published in the Spring issue.

If you're a subscriber you should already have it. It will be on newsstands the first week of March.

Copacetic has a very similar setup that was custom made by an Ebay seller. I bought a second jib bag so that I'd have one for the genoa and one for the jib, which I use rather than sailbags. It's the next best thing to roller furling.

I have had that exact tripod for years, and though it has been strapped to many things, I never thought of the boat hook. Thanks for a great idea.

I spent the better part of a week getting the brightwork in shape. I think it last saw varnish during the Clinton administration. Pictures and story on my website as always.

BTW, I used Cetol Naturual Teak and I think it came out nice, without the usual Cetol look.

I've been giving a lot of thought to converting mine to manual only operation. Some are recommending this after last year's Chicago-Mackinac disaster. It seems the sudden buoyancy may have contributed to trapping some sailors under a capsized boat. In addition, as you experienced, rain or a wave can...

By the way, Eric, manager at Crescent Shores Marina where we found our new boat, owns a 1979 Chrysler 26 with a red hull. It was about three boats away from the Columbia we bought. Dang Chryslers are everywhere! LOL

If you're using the roll and tip method, try to pick a non-windy day. I had issues with wind drying the surface before it could completely flow out. Other than that, it's really pretty straight forward. Sand and prep according to instructions, mask well, and always keep a wet edge to avoid getting r...

That looks fine to me. Round the leading edge and taper the trailing edge and should be very efficient. I think a belt sander would be fine. I don't know much about HPDE. Is that going to be stiff/strong enough for the forces involved? With the 3/4" thickness, how are you attaching the retract ...

I can find some pictures if you need them. Although I don't need winches for my halyards, if I did the lines would easily reach t...

Moving On Up!

I made a verbal agreement to purchase a bigger boat last night. It's a Columbia 9.6 in very sound condition but needs some TLC and updates. We plan to sail her across the lake, Holland, MI to Racine, WI in a little over a week if the weather man is agreeable. Copacetic will be for sale shortly, I ju...

I use one of these at the tack and another at the head. I also have a short line that I keep on the tack of each sail because I like them better about 9" off the deck.

Me and the Chicago-Mackinac Race

Ok, I wasn't really in the race, but, I was briefly sailing among the fleet. After dropping my daughter off to catch the train in Kenosha we saw the fleet out on the lake and decided we could back to Racine in time to intercept them. We intercepted a couple miles off Wind Point. We were careful not ...

Someone else had the rudder with the big "bushing". Copacetic is a '79 and has the single bolt. I wonder if this was an improvement they made shortly before closing up shop.
