Lee and Weather

Yup. Lee cloths keep you from falling out of the lee side of the berth. A weather cloth usually goes between the toe rail and life lines... not sure if it's to keep the weather out, or in recognition that most of the spray douses you from the weather side. Unless I'm wrong, and then they refer to so...

Windward's mount was barely a shell

when I started. http://www.sv-windward.com/shipslog/2002/pics/P6270013.JPG and took more work than I care to admit to http://www.sv-windward.com/projects/2002/pics/PC040094.JPG Ended up with 1.5" of marine ply laminated into the aft portion, overlapping/butted with 3/8" on the sides, gooed...

he ain't, there are no extenuating circumstances like channels, and if I have loads of time to avoid collision then so does he. However, if the fisherman doesn't alter course, it's still my responsibility to avoid collision. The "vessels engaged in fishing" clause only pertains to the comm...

just got seriously busy / overwhelmed at work, at home, with my son, and personally, Windward was on a trailer from late Oct until July (too many projects, didn't need another one), and apart from a couple of trips on a friend's boat on Lake St. Clair and a week long charter on the upper Chesapeake,...

No sticker here, I'm afraid

You must be a purist! My sticker is long gone, but doesn't affect stove function. And here I thought you were a camp stove/dish tub kinda cook, Gus! On Windward I have the original Kenyon pressurized alc stove; it's slow to boil, but I love it to cook with. Nice, even, controllable heat. The right-h...

I have two dinghies for Windward: a hard shell Backwater 7.5 and a Plastimo 270 HK inflatable. The Backwater weighs only 40#, kind of planes with 2.5 HP and just one person aboard, and is tippy as all get out. It can hold me, my wife and my son to go exceptionally short distances from boat to dock o...

For the drop boards, I did three, with the bottom two taller than the top one. The bottom comes to above the cockpit seats so that when secured it protects from flooding if lots of water visits the cockpit; even inland you can take on a fair amount if you wash a winch in big wind. The second board i...

I went with a loose foot, which makes it MUCH easier to adjust lower sail shape, and two full upper battens, which support a large roach well and reduce flogging when reefing (but can sometimes interfere with raise/lower/reefing when I'm off the wind, since I have steps on the mast). I also use a cu...

Helen, I'm not sure, but I think the C22 used a Kenyon 3049 spar, about 5" x 3". That clocks in at about 1.6# per foot, so once again Scott underestimates imself (he can lift into the three digit range) and it ought to be around 100# for 26.5'. You could look at www.rigrite.com or www.dwye...

Bill's also a really decent guy. I've purchased three sails from FX (and am getting set to pull the trigger on a high clewed 110), plus a couple of sails from Bill when he was with AirForce Sails, before their train wreck. I followed him to FX, and thus far have had no reason to stray. When Cruising...

I converted a hank on jib to a furler. Rough on the sewing machine, and unfortunately lots of room for improvement on the sail shape, but it's held up well. Assuming you've worked out the basics of sewing -- sounds like you have -- precut panels should give much better results than having the guess ...

Hi Adam, All things are doable, but it's not going to be straightforward. The stairs definitely lend structural integrity, as do the settees. With the proper planning and reinforcement, you could do a complete makeover and actually increase strength. Adding four stringers, some strategically placed ...

YES, integrity may / will be compromised!! The C-26 has little to stiffen the hull apart from the longitudinal portions of the settees. If you remove part of the interior you'll need to take remedial action to stiffen it up. With some thoughtful planning you could end up better than new; wit...

October through May. The deciding factor is wind, and we get lots of it then. I'm a little bent, though: last year one of my best weekends out involved one night on the hook with a low of 13 degF, a high the next day of 22 degF, and a low the next night of 10 (on the hook again). No houseboats that ...

As others have said, the C26 is an extremely seaworthy design, particularly for a trailer sailor. In a blow you'll need to reef early, but you'll give up before she will. I have had complete confidence in Windward in all conditions I've sailed her in, which include 4-6 footers (avg... some larger) o...

Spend some time pretending to sleep crossways before you decide to go that way. My original plan was to do exactly that, until I found that I could scarcely rollover, much less raise a knee. If you're using it as double, the aft-most sleeper will have an interesting time at best trying to get out to...

Don't think so

Unless you have a wildly non-standard rig, the C-22's vital stats are: I = 27.5' J = 8.75' P = 23.33' E = 7.58' There's allegedly a tall rig that clocks out at: I = 29' J = 8.75' P = 25' E = 8' And from Texas, weighing in at 5,000 lbs buck naked, the well-proportioned C-26 loves sailing, cookouts, c...

Windward came to me with that name. I considered renaming her, but as we all know a C-26 going to windward in a decent breeze is a sweet thing, and the name simply suits her. Scott, if you want some experience, why not come over to Tennessee for a week or two? You can stay in the spare room, and the sewing machine's all set up already.
